Udupi: A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus travelling from Udupi to Shivamogga got stuck while negotiating a sharp bend on Agumbe Ghat on Sunday, briefly disrupting traffic on the busy ghat road.

The incident occurred as the bus attempted to navigate a tight turn along the narrow, winding stretch. With the vehicle unable to clear the bend, passengers were asked to alight to help the driver manoeuvre the bus.

The driver then reversed the vehicle a short distance and carefully negotiated the turn, allowing the bus to proceed and traffic to resume.

Heavy traffic during holiday

Traffic was reportedly heavy due to the Sunday holiday, and a large number of passengers were travelling on the bus when the incident occurred. The temporary obstruction caused disruption on the ghat road until the bus cleared the bend.

Agumbe Ghat, known for its steep gradients, sharp curves and winding roads, requires drivers to exercise caution, particularly while operating large vehicles.

Concerns over bus operations

The incident has renewed concerns over the suitability of large buses on the narrow and winding ghat route. Passengers stressed the importance of deploying experienced drivers familiar with the challenging terrain.

Some also suggested operating smaller buses on the stretch, arguing that they may be easier to manoeuvre around sharp bends and steep slopes.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges of public transport operations on ghat roads, where vehicle size, road width and driving conditions can affect the smooth movement of traffic.
