A trekking expedition near Hosangadi ended in tragedy after a 53-year-old woman drowned in a river on February 28.
The deceased has been identified as Shubhashree Karanth, owner of a well-known medical shop in Kundapur.
According to sources, a group of eight to ten people from Kundapur had gone trekking towards the Metkal Hill area near Hosangadi. During the outing, Shubhashree reportedly entered the river and accidentally drowned.
Her body was later recovered and shifted to the government hospital in Kundapur for further procedures.
Police personnel from Amasebail Police Station visited the spot, collected preliminary information and initiated an investigation. Officials said further details regarding the exact circumstances leading to the drowning are awaited.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom in Kundapur, where Shubhashree was known in business and social circles. Authorities have urged trekkers and visitors to exercise caution near water bodies, particularly during outdoor activities in hilly and forested areas.
