The CCTV footage shows the leopard stealthily entering the property and suddenly attacking the dog, which was fast asleep in the courtyard. The dog, unaware of the approaching danger, was unable to escape as the leopard quickly pounced and grabbed it. Within seconds, the leopard disappeared into the nearby forest with the dog in its jaws, leaving no trace behind.
This terrifying encounter has raised alarm among the local residents, who fear for the safety of their pets and livestock, as well as their own safety. Many villagers in the area have reported feeling uneasy, especially during the early mornings and late evenings when leopards are known to be most active.
Sudhir Shetty, the homeowner, immediately reported the incident to the local forest department, urging them to take swift action. “We are all scared, especially for our children and pets. We hope the authorities will capture the leopard soon before it returns,” he stated. Other villagers echoed his concerns, worried that the leopard may strike again.
In response, the forest department has confirmed they are taking the matter seriously and will be setting up traps in the vicinity to safely capture the leopard. They have advised residents to be cautious, keep their pets indoors during night hours, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities after dark.
Incidents of leopards venturing into residential areas in search of food are becoming increasingly common in rural parts of Udupi and surrounding areas, as deforestation and habitat loss drive these wild animals closer to human settlements. Forest officials explained that the shrinking natural habitats and scarcity of prey are often the reasons for leopards entering villages.
The forest department has also appealed to residents to report any further leopard sightings immediately, as capturing the leopard will require cooperation from the entire community. Meanwhile, villagers remain on high alert, hoping for a resolution that will restore peace to their lives.
