Udupi: In preparation for the upcoming Paryaya Mahotsava, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to sanction a special grant of ₹50 crore for the development of essential infrastructure in the city.
The Paryaya Mahotsava, held once every two years at Sri Krishna Math, is one of Udupi’s most revered religious events, celebrated with grandeur akin to a state festival. It attracts lakhs of devotees and tourists from across India and abroad, highlighting Udupi as a prominent centre for temple tourism.
Historic celebration scheduled for January 2026
The next Paryaya will be observed on January 17 and 18, 2026, when His Holiness Sri Vedavardhana Theertha Swamiji of Sri Shirur Math will ascend the sacred Paryaya Peetha to assume responsibility for the temple’s administration for the next term.
Given the scale of the event, authorities anticipate a significant inflow of pilgrims, necessitating comprehensive preparations to ensure smooth management and enhanced visitor experience.
Infrastructure works planned
MLA Suvarna, in his appeal to the Chief Minister, emphasised the urgent need for civic improvements, including road repairs, re-asphalting, street illumination, cleanliness drives, and other infrastructure upgrades in and around Udupi city.
He noted that these developments would not only facilitate the smooth conduct of the Mahotsava but also leave a lasting impact on Udupi’s tourism potential and overall urban growth.
Special grant essential for preparations
Highlighting the religious, cultural and economic significance of the Paryaya Mahotsava, Suvarna stated, “An allocation of ₹50 crore as a special grant will ensure that the sanctity and grandeur of this historic celebration are maintained while providing the necessary facilities for lakhs of visiting devotees.”
Conclusion
With the government’s approval of the proposed grant, Udupi could witness significant civic improvements ahead of the Paryaya Mahotsava, reinforcing its position as a major spiritual and cultural hub of Karnataka.
