Udupi: A motorcyclist lost his life in a horrific road accident after his bike rammed into a private bus near Gulwadi village on the outskirts of Kundapur on Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as Vijay, who suffered fatal head injuries in the crash and was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Accident occurred on busy rural road
The incident took place around 8.12 am when a private bus was travelling towards Kundapur via the Kollur route on the Neralakatte–Tallur road. The bus, operated on the Bengaluru–Kundapur route, was carrying passengers at the time of the accident.
According to the complaint filed by the bus driver, Sampath K Shetty, a resident of Shivamogga district, the journey was proceeding normally until the vehicle reached a curve near an Indian Oil petrol pump at Shetrakatte. The stretch of road is known for sharp bends and limited visibility, especially during peak morning hours.
Motorcycle attempted overtaking on blind curve
Police said that Vijay was riding his motorcycle from the opposite direction and approached the curve at high speed. CCTV footage from the area, which police described as chilling, reportedly shows the motorcyclist attempting to overtake another bus at the blind curve.
The visuals indicate that Vijay was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. While overtaking, the motorcycle allegedly veered towards the extreme right side of the road in a rash and negligent manner, leaving little room for corrective action.
Bus driver’s attempt to avoid collision fails
Noticing the motorcycle suddenly appearing on the wrong side of the road, the bus driver reportedly acted swiftly to prevent a major accident. Sampath K Shetty stated that he swerved the bus to the left and moved onto the mud shoulder in an effort to avoid a head-on collision.
Despite this attempt, the motorcycle crashed into the bus with considerable force. The impact threw Vijay violently onto the road, causing him to sustain severe head injuries.
Passengers on the bus were reportedly shaken by the incident, though none of them suffered injuries.
Victim rushed to hospital, declared dead
Following the collision, the bus driver, along with local residents who rushed to the spot, immediately arranged for Vijay to be shifted to a hospital in Kundapur. Witnesses said the victim was unconscious and bleeding profusely from the head.
Doctors at the hospital declared Vijay dead on arrival. Medical sources indicated that the head injuries were critical and likely fatal due to the absence of protective headgear.
Police register case under BNS
Kundapur traffic police have registered a case in connection with the accident under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police officials said the CCTV footage would play a crucial role in the investigation, helping establish the sequence of events leading to the crash. Statements from the bus driver, passengers and eyewitnesses are also being recorded.
Concerns over rash driving and helmet safety
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about rash driving, especially on narrow roads with blind curves, and the continued disregard for helmet safety among two-wheeler riders.
Traffic officials pointed out that overtaking at high speed on curves is extremely dangerous and often leads to fatal accidents. They also reiterated that wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of death in road accidents.
“Preliminary evidence suggests that reckless overtaking and the failure to wear a helmet contributed to the fatality,” a police officer said, adding that awareness and strict enforcement were necessary to prevent such tragedies.
Local residents seek safety measures
Residents in the area have expressed concern over frequent accidents on the Neralakatte–Tallur road. They said speeding vehicles and risky overtaking manoeuvres are common, particularly during early morning hours.
Locals have urged authorities to install additional warning signboards, speed breakers and surveillance cameras near curves to improve road safety. Some also demanded regular traffic checks to curb dangerous driving practices.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Vijay serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by rash driving and non-compliance with basic safety norms. As investigations continue, police have appealed to motorists to exercise caution, avoid risky overtaking and strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent further loss of life on the region’s roads.
