Udupi: In an incident highlighting communal harmony, two Muslim women approached district minister Laxmi R Hebbalkar on Saturday seeking assistance for a poor Hindu widow who has been unable to obtain possession of land allotted to her by the government nearly 35 years ago.
The request was made during the minister’s visit to the district, where the women urged authorities to intervene and help the elderly woman secure her long-pending land rights.
The case involves Girija Shettigar, an elderly widow from 80 Badagabettu village in Udupi taluk, who has been living in a rented house since the death of her husband.
Land allotted decades ago remains inaccessible
According to available information, Girija Shettigar was allotted five cents of land in 1989 under a government housing scheme and a title deed had also been issued in her name.
However, she allegedly could not take possession of the land after forest department officials reportedly raised objections, claiming that the allotted land fell within a reserved forest area.
As a result, she remained unable to build a house despite being the beneficiary of the scheme.
With limited financial resources, she was unable to pursue legal remedies and continued to work as a daily wage labourer while paying rent for accommodation.
Neighbour’s family extended support
Reports stated that the family of her neighbour Salahuddin had been supporting her over the years and helping her approach different authorities regarding the issue.
Despite repeated efforts and representations, the matter reportedly remained unresolved.
The women also informed the minister that some well-wishers were prepared to help construct a house for Girija if possession of the land was granted.
Minister calls it an example of unity
During the minister’s stay in the district, the two women approached her and requested intervention.
According to reports, they told the minister that they were not seeking anything for themselves but only wanted help for the elderly widow.
Moved by the appeal, Laxmi R Hebbalkar described the incident as an example of unity and communal harmony.
She stated that Muslim women seeking justice for a poor Hindu woman reflected the spirit of India and assured that action would be taken through the Deputy Commissioner regarding the matter.
The incident has drawn attention for highlighting support and compassion beyond religious identities, with residents describing it as a reflection of social unity and humanity.
