More than 1,000 residents in Uppunda, Udupi district, fell sick after consuming contaminated water from a local overhead tank, health officials reported on Friday. Most affected individuals, primarily from Karki Kalli and Madikal wards of Uppunda Gram Panchayat, exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Thankfully, none of the cases were severe, and many have recovered with treatment from local health centers.
The Udupi District Health Officer, Dr. I P Gadadh, confirmed the presence of salmonella bacillary, a waterborne pathogen, in the water supply. Investigations revealed 150 cases so far, with the issue traced back to contaminated water from the Kasinadi overhead tank. The contamination was likely caused by poor maintenance and muddy water supply after a three-day disruption. Residents who filtered or boiled the water avoided illness.
The water supply from the affected tank has been halted, and villagers are demanding an investigation and immediate corrective action.
