Kota: An incident involving the alleged humiliation of a retired Army soldier at the Sasthan toll plaza on the eve of the 77th Republic Day has triggered widespread outrage after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media. The incident occurred on Sunday night when toll staff reportedly refused to grant toll exemption to the former soldier despite him possessing valid authorisation.
The retired soldier has been identified as Shyamaraj, a native of Kasaragod district and a former paratrooper of the elite 21st Para Special Forces (E.V.). According to information shared by the soldier himself, he was travelling with his wife through the Sasthan toll plaza when the incident took place. His wife is currently serving in the Military Nursing Service, and the couple was on the move in connection with her official posting.
Toll exemption allegedly denied despite valid letter
In a video recorded at the spot and later posted on social media, Shyamaraj alleged that toll staff at the Sasthan toll plaza refused to honour a toll exemption letter issued by the concerned Road Maintenance Authority (RMA). He stated that such exemptions are routinely accepted at toll plazas across the country, especially for serving and retired defence personnel.
According to Shyamaraj, despite repeatedly showing the official document and explaining his status as a retired soldier, toll plaza employees insisted that the exemption would not be granted. The video shows a tense exchange between him and toll staff, with the former soldier expressing distress and anger over what he described as disrespectful treatment.
The video rapidly gained traction online, with thousands of users sharing it and condemning the alleged behaviour of the toll plaza staff. Many expressed shock that such an incident occurred on the eve of Republic Day, a day dedicated to honouring the Constitution and the services of the armed forces.
Public outrage and social media reaction
As the video circulated widely, public outrage grew across platforms such as X, Facebook and WhatsApp. Several users criticised the toll authorities for what they termed as “insensitivity” and “ignorance” of rules related to defence personnel.
Many commentators pointed out that toll exemptions for armed forces personnel are clearly outlined in guidelines and that denial of such benefits reflects a lack of proper training and awareness among toll staff. Others demanded strict action against those responsible and called for better sensitisation of frontline workers dealing with the public.
Veterans’ groups and supporters of the armed forces also voiced their concern, stating that incidents like these undermine the respect due to soldiers who have served the nation, often at great personal cost.
Apology by toll plaza staff
Following the backlash, it was reported that the toll plaza staff later realised their mistake and issued an apology to Shyamaraj. Sources said the matter was internally reviewed after the video went viral, leading to an acknowledgement of error by those on duty at the time.
While the apology helped defuse the immediate tension, many users online maintained that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for authorities managing toll plazas to ensure proper implementation of exemption rules and respectful conduct towards defence personnel.
Shyamaraj’s military service and sacrifice
The incident drew even greater attention after details of Shyamaraj’s military background emerged. He is a survivor of a major incident during Operation Parakram, one of India’s largest military mobilisations following the 2001 Parliament attack.
During the operation, Shyamaraj was part of a team returning after a successful counter-terror mission when their vehicle ran over landmines, triggering a massive explosion. The blast completely destroyed the vehicle, resulting in the martyrdom of 15 soldiers. Only two personnel survived the incident, one of them being Shyamaraj.
He reportedly remained in a coma for 15 days following the blast. Although he eventually recovered, he sustained severe spinal injuries that left him permanently disabled, leading to his retirement from active military service.
The resurfacing of his story following the toll plaza incident intensified public anger, with many stating that a soldier who had survived such an ordeal deserved dignity and respect in civilian life.
Call for systemic reforms
The episode has once again highlighted gaps in awareness and implementation of policies related to defence personnel at public facilities. Experts and veterans have emphasised the need for regular training of toll staff and clear communication of exemption guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also stressed that beyond rules and paperwork, a basic sense of respect and empathy towards those who have served the country is essential.
Conclusion
While the apology from the toll plaza staff has brought temporary closure to the incident, the viral episode has sparked a larger conversation on how veterans are treated in everyday interactions. The incident serves as a reminder that institutional sensitivity, especially towards armed forces personnel, must go beyond symbolic gestures and be reflected in consistent, respectful practice on the ground.
