Udupi: Police in Udupi have detained a habitual offender under the provisions of the Goonda Act in a bid to curb criminal activities and maintain public order in the district. The accused, Ganesh Poojary (48), a resident of Kaudoor village, has been taken into preventive custody following a series of criminal cases registered against him.
Detention ordered by district authorities
The action was initiated based on a detailed report submitted by Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar. Acting on the recommendation, Deputy Commissioner Swaroop T.K. issued a formal detention order on April 4 under the Goonda Act.
Following the order, Ganesh Poojary has been lodged in the central prison in Kalaburagi.
Multiple criminal cases on record
According to police records, the accused has a history of criminal involvement spanning several serious offences. A total of 11 cases have been registered against him at the Karkala Town Police Station.
These include four cases of attempted murder, one robbery case, three cases of assault, one case of unlawful assembly, a gambling-related offence, and another miscellaneous case.
Status of cases
Officials stated that among the registered cases, the accused has been convicted in one case and acquitted in seven others. One case is currently under trial, while two cases remain under investigation.
Despite acquittals in several cases, police authorities emphasised that the pattern of repeated offences and alleged involvement in serious crimes warranted preventive detention.
Preventive measure to maintain order
Police clarified that the detention under the Goonda Act is a preventive measure aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order in the region. Such provisions are typically invoked against habitual offenders whose activities are considered a threat to society.
Authorities believe that this action will help deter further criminal behaviour and send a strong message against repeat offenders in the district.
Conclusion
The detention of Ganesh Poojary under the Goonda Act reflects the administration’s proactive approach towards tackling habitual offenders and maintaining peace in Udupi. Police officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety through strict legal measures against those involved in repeated criminal activities.
