Udupi: A major tragedy was averted at the Udupi Konkan Railway Station on Thursday night when a passenger who slipped while attempting to alight from a moving train was rescued in the nick of time by a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. The incident occurred around 10.20 pm as the Amritsar Express, running from Thiruvananthapuram to New Delhi, was entering the station.
According to railway officials, the passenger tried to get down from the train even before it came to a complete halt. In the process, he lost his balance and fell dangerously close to the edge of the platform and the tracks. Alertness and swift action by the on-duty RPF personnel prevented what could have been a fatal accident.
Quick response prevents tragedy
Railway Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Saju U., who was deployed at the station at the time, noticed the passenger falling from the moving train. Without hesitation, he rushed towards the spot and managed to pull the passenger away from the tracks, preventing him from coming under the wheels of the train.
Officials said the entire episode unfolded within a matter of seconds. The timely intervention ensured that the passenger suffered no serious injuries. He was later given first aid and counselled by railway staff.
The dramatic rescue was captured on the station’s CCTV cameras, and the footage is now being reviewed by railway authorities as part of routine documentation.
Passenger safety and railway advisory
Railway officials reiterated that passengers should never attempt to board or alight from trains while they are in motion. “Such actions are extremely dangerous and often lead to serious injuries or fatalities. Passengers must wait until the train comes to a complete halt and ensure it is safe to get down,” an official said.
The Konkan Railway section, which passes through Udupi, is known for busy stations and heavy passenger movement, especially on long-distance express trains. Officials said incidents of passengers attempting to get down early are reported occasionally, despite repeated announcements and advisories.
RPF lauded for vigilance
Senior railway officials praised ASI Saju U. for his presence of mind and dedication to duty. They said the incident highlights the crucial role played by RPF and railway police personnel in ensuring passenger safety.
“The alertness shown by the officer saved a precious life. Such acts of bravery and responsibility reflect the commitment of railway staff to public safety,” an official said.
Railway authorities added that CCTV surveillance, combined with constant patrolling by RPF personnel, has significantly improved safety standards at stations along the Konkan Railway route.
Growing concern over unsafe practices
Railway officials expressed concern over passengers taking risks due to haste, confusion about stations, or lack of awareness. In some cases, passengers attempt to get down early fearing they may miss their stop, especially during late-night hours.
Officials urged travellers to remain calm, pay attention to announcements, and seek assistance from railway staff if unsure about their destination or platform.
They also appealed to fellow passengers to alert railway personnel immediately if they notice anyone engaging in unsafe behaviour.
Conclusion
The timely rescue at Udupi railway station serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with unsafe travel practices and the importance of vigilance by railway personnel. While the passenger escaped unharmed due to quick action by the RPF, officials stressed that safety ultimately depends on responsible behaviour by travellers. The railway administration reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and urged the public to strictly follow safety norms while travelling.
