A tenth-grade student from Mandya, who fell seriously ill during a school tour to St. Mary’s Island, was saved by the quick actions of a tourist boat manager and his team. The student, Jagadishwari, from Sir Vishweshwaraiah High School in Shivalli taluk, Mandya, experienced a sudden health crisis due to low blood pressure. She was promptly rescued and rushed to a hospital.
While on a three-day educational tour organized by the school, the students visited St. Mary’s Island on Saturday. During the visit, Jagadishwari began to feel dizzy from the heat, followed by vomiting and eventual collapse as her blood pressure plummeted. The tourist boat manager, Praveen Malpe, along with his assistant Shaanraj Kotian, acted swiftly to get her to safety. They used a speedboat to bring her to shore and immediately provided first aid. Malpe and Kotian then arranged for an ambulance that took Jagadishwari to a private hospital in Udupi. Fortunately, the student has since made a full recovery.
The medical expenses were fully covered by the tourist boat operator near the Malpe Sea Walk. Ganesh Malpe, head of the tourist boat operations, pointed out the lack of adequate safety measures on St. Mary’s Island. He emphasized the need for emergency safety equipment like a Jet Ski scooter, particularly since the island attracts a significant number of visitors, especially on weekends and holidays. This issue has been reported to the deputy commissioner for urgent attention.
