The Manipal police arrested 67-year-old Bimsent John from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, for defrauding a five-star hotel in Manipal by falsely claiming to attend a conference. Known for targeting luxury hotels nationwide, John dined and stayed at the hotel, accruing a bill of ₹39,298, which he fled without paying.
John, who booked the room on December 7, promised to pay by December 9 but disappeared instead. Acting swiftly, a team led by Inspector Devaraj apprehended him on the same day. Investigations revealed that John had committed similar frauds in Delhi, Thane, and Kollam, amassing unpaid bills at upscale hotels.
A graduate with a history of 49 fraud cases across India, John was first convicted in 1996 for a similar crime in Delhi, serving five years in prison. Unmarried, he has since continued his fraudulent activities.
The Manipal police produced him before the Udupi court, which has placed him in judicial custody for 14 days.
