Udupi: Udupi district has been declared fully literate by the Karnataka government, marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to improve adult education and literacy. The official district-level announcement is expected to be made on November 1, coinciding with Kannada Rajyotsava.

The government issued an order recognising Udupi’s achievement after the district attained a literacy rate of 95%, meeting the threshold prescribed under the Union government’s norms for a fully literate region.

The proposal was submitted by the Udupi Zilla Panchayat and examined by the state government before the order was issued. Preparations are now underway for the formal announcement at the district level.

Literacy rate reaches 95%

Under the prescribed norms, a literacy rate of 95% or above qualifies a region to be recognised as fully literate. Udupi’s achievement reflects the work carried out through adult education initiatives aimed at identifying people who have not had access to formal schooling and helping them acquire basic literacy skills.

The campaign focused on improving reading, writing and numeracy among adults across the district’s gram panchayats.

Adult education programmes drive progress

Several initiatives have contributed to the improvement in literacy levels. Under the state government’s literacy programme, selected gram panchayats were involved in identifying non-literate residents and providing them with learning opportunities.

Training sessions and assessments were conducted to help participants develop essential reading, writing and arithmetic skills.

Earlier reports indicated that 6,158 people had acquired literacy through various initiatives over a three-year period, helping raise the district’s literacy rate to the required level.

The programmes have focused particularly on people who missed out on formal education during childhood, including older residents who later received opportunities to learn basic skills.

Formal announcement planned for Kannada Rajyotsava

The district-level declaration is expected on November 1, when Karnataka celebrates Kannada Rajyotsava. The recognition would place Udupi among districts that have met the prescribed literacy benchmark through organised education initiatives.

The achievement highlights the role of local administration, gram panchayats and adult education officials in expanding access to learning beyond conventional school education.

A milestone for education in coastal Karnataka

Udupi is widely recognised for its educational institutions, and the fully literate district status adds another milestone to its education profile.

The initiative demonstrates the importance of continuing education opportunities for adults who were unable to complete formal schooling. Officials’ efforts to identify non-literate residents, provide training and assess learning outcomes have helped the district reach the prescribed threshold.

With the formal announcement expected on Kannada Rajyotsava, Udupi’s achievement is set to receive wider recognition as Karnataka continues its efforts to strengthen literacy and lifelong learning.
