Udupi: Udupi city police have arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly producing a fake Aadhaar card before the Udupi CJM Court to secure bail for an accused in a case.
The arrested person has been identified as Umar Moideen (65), a resident of Chandranagar in Kaup.
Fake Aadhaar allegedly used to stand as surety
According to the police, Moideen allegedly prepared a fake Aadhaar card by using the Aadhaar number belonging to another person and inserting a false address.
He allegedly then appeared before the court by claiming to be a different person and stood as surety for the accused in the case.
The alleged impersonation came to light when the documents and identity details were verified.
Identity exposed during verification
During the verification process, officials reportedly found discrepancies in the Aadhaar details and Moideen’s identity.
Following this, Udupi city police arrested him on September 10.
He was subsequently produced before the court and has been remanded in judicial custody.
The police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the preparation and use of the fake Aadhaar card, including the involvement of others.
Police search for alleged accomplices
According to the police, around three other persons allegedly assisted Moideen in preparing the fake Aadhaar card.
Investigators are continuing their efforts to identify and trace these persons.
The police are examining the role allegedly played by each person in preparing the forged document and facilitating its use before the court.
The case has also raised concerns over attempts to misuse identity documents during court proceedings, particularly while arranging sureties for accused persons.
