Udupi: Residents of Adi Udupi and members of the Udupi Taluk Parishista Vargagala Dodda Pramanada Vividhoddesha Sahakara Sangha Niyamit (LAMP) have expressed deep concern over the worsening sanitary conditions caused by improper waste disposal from nearby meat shops.

In the absence of a dedicated underground drainage system behind the meat stalls, wastewater and animal blood from slaughtered goats and sheep are flowing directly into the housing society’s premises. This has resulted in severe water stagnation, creating unhygienic conditions and posing serious health risks.

According to residents, waste from the shops is seeping through boundary walls and contaminating the compound. The stagnant water, mixed with blood and organic waste, has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies, and other disease-carrying insects. More alarmingly, the polluted runoff has started infiltrating a nearby well, making the water unfit for consumption and emitting a foul odor.

The issue affects not only the residents and cooperative members but also beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System (PDS), as ration distribution occurs within the same premises. Complaints have reportedly been raised multiple times, but city municipal authorities have yet to take corrective action.

The society has now urged the local administration to act swiftly and construct a proper underground drainage network. They stress that immediate intervention is essential to restore sanitation, safeguard public health, and prevent further contamination of water sources in the area.
