Udupi: Newly admitted undergraduate students in Udupi were encouraged to understand their strengths and weaknesses, prioritise mental health and make meaningful use of the opportunities available during their college years.

Psychiatrist Virupaksha Devaramane was speaking at ‘Abhivinyasa’, an orientation programme organised for newly admitted undergraduate students by G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Postgraduate Study Centre at Town Hall in Udupi on Monday.

Students urged to understand themselves

Addressing the students, Devaramane said college life provides an important opportunity for young people to understand themselves, build confidence and prepare for their future.

He encouraged students to recognise their individual strengths while also being aware of their weaknesses. Instead of comparing themselves with others, students should focus on their own abilities and work towards continuous improvement.

The psychiatrist said self-awareness can help young people make informed choices and face academic, personal and social challenges with greater confidence.

Mental health must be a priority

Devaramane also highlighted the importance of mental health among college students. Academic pressure, expectations about careers and personal challenges can sometimes leave young people feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Students should be willing to seek support when necessary and should not consider asking for help a weakness. Maintaining healthy relationships, communicating openly and seeking guidance from trusted people can help students manage difficult situations constructively.

Make the most of college opportunities

The orientation programme also highlighted the importance of making productive use of campus life. Students were encouraged to participate in academic activities, cultural programmes, sports, competitions, clubs and other initiatives offered by their institution.

Such activities can help students discover their interests while developing communication, teamwork and leadership skills.

For the young women beginning a new chapter at the G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College in Udupi, the orientation served as an important introduction to college life and the opportunities ahead.

The message was clear: college is not merely about earning a degree, but about understanding oneself, protecting mental well-being and building the confidence and skills needed for the future.
