Udupi: Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji of Shiroor Mutt on Sunday created history by becoming the youngest seer to ascend the Sarvajna Peetha and assume the sacred responsibility of conducting worship of Lord Sri Krishna at the famed Sri Krishna Mutt. The momentous occasion marked the formal commencement of the biennial Paryaya Mahotsava, one of the most significant religious traditions of the coastal region, witnessed by thousands of devotees who gathered from across Karnataka and neighbouring States.

The Paryaya Mahotsava began in the early hours of the morning with the traditional Paryaya procession arriving from Jodukatte. The spiritually charged atmosphere, devotional chants and rhythmic music set the tone for the historic day, as devotees lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the young seer assuming the revered role.

Sacred rituals mark beginning of Paryaya

Before the grand procession, Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji performed the customary holy dip at Danda Thirtha, a ritual symbolising spiritual purification. From there, he proceeded to Jodukatte, the traditional starting point of the Paryaya procession.

The procession then moved along Ratha Beedi, the main ceremonial street, and reached the Sri Krishna Mutt complex in the early morning hours. The route was filled with devotees chanting hymns, while traditional instruments added to the solemnity and grandeur of the event.

Upon arrival at the temple, the seer had darshan of Lord Sri Krishna through the Kanakana Kindi, the iconic window associated with saint Kanakadasa. He then offered prayers to Sri Chandramoulishwara and Sri Ananteshwara, in keeping with long-standing customs associated with the Paryaya tradition.

Ceremonial transfer of responsibilities

A key highlight of the ceremony was the formal transfer of Paryaya responsibilities by the outgoing pontiff, Sri Sugunendra Thirtha Swamiji of Sri Puttige Mutt. In a solemn ritual, Sri Sugunendra Thirtha Swamiji welcomed the Shiroor seer and handed over the Akshaya Pathre, soutu and the keys of the mutt.

This symbolic act marked the official beginning of the two-year tenure during which Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji will administer the Sri Krishna Mutt and oversee daily worship, temple management and associated religious and social activities.

Following the transfer, the young pontiff offered the daily puja to Lord Krishna for the first time as the Paryaya Peetha seer, drawing an emotional response from devotees who witnessed the historic moment.

Udupi dons festive look

The temple town wore a vibrant and festive look as part of the celebrations. Streets were decorated with banners, festoons and floral arrangements, while shops and commercial establishments across the city adorned their premises to mark the auspicious occasion.

Thousands of devotees partook in anna prasada arranged on a large scale, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the Paryaya tradition. Volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure smooth arrangements for food distribution, crowd management and other facilities for pilgrims.

Colourful procession and cultural splendour

The Paryaya procession was a visual spectacle, featuring more than 85 cultural troupes from different States. Traditional folk artistes, classical dancers and percussion ensembles showcased the diversity and richness of Indian culture.

Several elaborate tableaux depicting mythological themes and social messages rolled through the streets, drawing admiration from spectators. Pontiffs from various mutts, along with public representatives and dignitaries, participated in the celebrations, underlining the significance of the event in the religious and cultural calendar of the region.

Cultural programmes were organised by various clubs and organisations as part of the festivities, adding to the celebratory spirit that continued throughout the day.

Cultural events by Oscar Fernandes Fans Club

Among the notable cultural initiatives, the Oscar Fernandes Fans Club organised a Kunitha Bhajane dance competition based on religious themes. A Yakshagana performance was also staged at Congress Bhavana, drawing a large audience of art and culture enthusiasts.

Yathish Karkera, president of the club, said that former Union minister Oscar Fernandes had consistently supported Paryaya Mahotsava celebrations. “To carry forward the legacy of late Oscar Fernandes, his fans have been organising cultural programmes during the Paryaya festival every year,” he said.

He added that this year’s events were also held to express gratitude to Shiroor Mutt for its social initiatives undertaken during the tenure of Sri Laxmivara Thirtha Swamiji, the previous seer of the mutt.

Significance of the Paryaya tradition

The Paryaya system, unique to the Sri Krishna Mutt, involves the rotation of temple administration among the eight Ashta Mutts of Udupi every two years. Ascending the Sarvajna Peetha is considered a moment of great spiritual responsibility, as the pontiff is entrusted with upholding centuries-old traditions while also addressing contemporary challenges.

Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji’s ascension as the youngest seer to assume this role has added a special dimension to the celebrations, inspiring devotees and followers.

Conclusion

The historic Paryaya Mahotsava marked not only a ceremonial transition but also a reaffirmation of faith, tradition and community spirit. As Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji begins his two-year tenure, devotees expressed hope that the sacred legacy of the Sri Krishna Mutt will continue to flourish under his stewardship, blending spiritual depth with social responsibility.
