The murder probe into Sampath, also known as Shambhu — a contractor from Kakkehole Junction in Somwarpet taluk — has taken a serious turn after his lifeless body was located in suspicious circumstances near Kallahalli village in Sakleshpur taluk, Hassan district.
Sampath vanished from Kushalnagar on May 9. His remains, showing severe head trauma likely caused by a sharp blade or knife, were discovered in an isolated area, prompting an intense investigation by Kodagu Police.
Sampath was previously arrested in connection with a 2016 incident where eggs were hurled at Siddaramaiah, then Opposition Leader and now Chief Minister, during a Madikeri visit. He had been released on bail at the time of his death.
Police strongly suspect a calculated killing. Two special squads have been assembled, and key clues have surfaced. Authorities believe the perpetrators may have escaped through Hassan towards Chikkamagaluru. One team has been dispatched in pursuit.
During a press briefing at Harangi Tourist Lodge, Kodagu SP K. Ramarajan suggested ties to a 2023 assault case involving Sampath. He was accused of harassing a woman named Sangeetha from Hanagallu village. Her husband and relatives reportedly retaliated, resulting in a criminal complaint.
Investigators believe Sampath had an affair with Sangeetha and possessed private recordings, which may have led to threats and blackmail. He used a borrowed Punto car on May 9, likely to remain unnoticed; it was later discovered abandoned with bloodstains in Yeslur.
Sangeetha’s husband Kiran and associate Ganapathi are prime suspects. The investigation is close to conclusion.
