On Friday, a somber atmosphere enveloped Talacauvery and Tyagathur in Kodagu as the decomposed carcasses of two male elephants were discovered, raising concerns about wildlife conservation in the region.
Discovery in Talacauvery
In Talacauvery, the carcass of a 40-year-old elephant was found on the grassland adjacent to the forest. According to DCF Bhaskar, the elephant’s ivory was retrieved, hinting at the possibility that the tusker succumbed to injuries sustained in a clash with other elephants.
Tragic Loss in Thyagathur
In another distressing incident, an 18-year-old wild elephant was found dead within a coffee plantation in Thyagathur. The plantation, owned by M M Girish, became the site of this unfortunate discovery when laborers en route to work stumbled upon the elephant’s carcass. Forest Department officials were promptly notified. It is suspected that the tusker perished about a week ago, possibly due to injuries sustained in a confrontation with fellow elephants.
Calls for Conservation and Vigilance
These tragic incidents underscore the urgent need for heightened conservation efforts and vigilant protection of wildlife habitats in Kodagu. As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding these deaths, it’s imperative for communities and stakeholders to come together in safeguarding the region’s precious wildlife.
