A herd of wild elephants has been wreaking havoc on crops within Sampaje gram panchayat limits for the past three days. The elephants have damaged arecanut, coconut, and plantain crops owned by Devaragunda Sheshappa, Chandrashekhara, and Harish of Chadavu. The herd has been entering the farms by descending through rubber plantations in the forest under Kodagu limits, attracted by nearby bamboo and palm trees.
Farm owners attempted to ward off the elephants by bursting crackers on Friday and waited until midnight. However, the elephants struck after the owners went to sleep, leaving them shocked to find their crops destroyed the next morning. This incident mirrors a similar raid by wild elephants in the area three years ago.
