Madikeri: A woman tourist lost her life in a tragic incident at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Kushalnagar after a trained elephant reportedly fell on her during an elephant bathing session. The victim has been identified as Joysi, 33, who had reportedly travelled from Tamil Nadu with her family on a tour.
Her husband and child escaped without injuries in the incident. Authorities have ordered an investigation into the matter while also directing officials to review safety protocols for visitors at wildlife tourism locations.
Incident occurred during elephant bathing session
According to police and preliminary information, the incident took place while elephants at the camp were being bathed.
Officials stated that two trained elephants, identified as Kanjan and Marthanda, reportedly became involved in a fight during the bathing session.
Despite efforts by mahouts to control the animals, Kanjan allegedly charged towards Marthanda and rammed the elephant.
During the incident, Marthanda reportedly lost balance and fell.
Authorities stated that the woman became trapped beneath the elephant during the sudden movement and sustained fatal injuries.
Family had arrived from Tamil Nadu
Police said the family had come to Kodagu district from Tamil Nadu as part of a tour visit.
The incident caused panic among tourists and staff members present at the camp.
Officials stated that the woman’s husband and child narrowly escaped unharmed.
Further details regarding the sequence of events are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
Minister orders detailed investigation
Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre expressed condolences and directed officials to conduct a detailed inquiry.
The minister described the incident as deeply shocking and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
He also instructed authorities to take measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
According to officials, directions have also been issued to strengthen visitor safety measures at wildlife tourism centres.
Safety rules for tourists likely to be tightened
Authorities indicated that trained elephants and other wild animals can sometimes behave unpredictably despite being accustomed to human interaction.
Following the incident, officials have been directed to strictly regulate visitor interaction with elephants and wildlife.
The minister reportedly instructed authorities to prohibit certain activities involving close interaction with elephants, including:
- Touching elephants’ trunks
- Standing close for photographs
- Allowing tourists to bathe elephants
- Feeding elephants food items such as bananas and jaggery
Officials have also been asked to ensure that visitors maintain a prescribed safe distance from wildlife.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with close human interaction with wild animals, even in controlled environments.
Authorities are expected to review existing visitor safety measures as investigations continue.
