Kolar: A tragic car accident near the Inayatpur culvert claimed the lives of two youths and left another injured, drawing attention to severe road safety lapses. The mishap occurred when a car, approaching the culvert from the Kolar Dam side, fell into a canal due to an abrupt end of the road, inadequate barricades, and poor lighting conditions.
In response, the road construction agency closed the problematic lane by dumping truckloads of murum (gravel) and marking the road leading to the culvert. Locals revealed that prior to the accident, only a small barricade was placed to alert drivers about the sudden lane termination.
TOI’s on-site visit found significant road engineering issues. The Kolar six-lane road narrows abruptly at the culvert, creating a bottleneck. The absence of proper railings and functional high-mast lighting further compounded the danger. Residents, including Mohammed Umar, noted that action was taken to block the road’s abrupt end only hours after the car was pulled from the canal.
Manish, a local witness, stated the accident occurred because the car’s driver couldn’t see the poorly lit barricade after taking a sharp left turn near the culvert. Bilal Khan corroborated that road markings and the murum dumping were done post-accident.
Kolar police acknowledged the road’s hazardous design and assured a comprehensive investigation. SHO Sanjay Soni stated that negligence by the construction agency would be probed, particularly for failing to install proper signage and safety measures.
