Koppal: Known for its rich historical sites, Koppal district has become a favored destination for both domestic and international travelers. This tourism boom has led to a surge in private resorts, many of which are operating without proper authorization, resulting in significant government revenue loss.

Offering tent accommodations, air-conditioned rooms, and themed restaurants, these resorts create an illusion of a Western Ghats retreat while being located in Koppal district. The highest concentration of these unauthorized establishments can be seen in Basapur (Koppal taluk) and Sanapur (Gangavati taluk), drawing visitors from across India and abroad. Many tourists exploring Hampi, Anjanadri, and Anegondi opt for these secluded getaways for relaxation.

Earlier, Virupapur Gadde was dubbed ‘Mini Goa’ for its resort culture, but intervention by the Hampi Development Authority (HDA) led to their removal. Now, resorts are sprouting outside HDA’s jurisdiction, bypassing land conversion regulations. Instead of changing agricultural land to commercial use, which would increase tax obligations, resort owners continue to operate illegally, evading government levies.

Allegations of local officials accepting bribes to ignore these violations have further angered locals. Repeated appeals to the District Collector for action have so far yielded no results. Additionally, concerns about illegal activities within some resorts are growing, prompting calls for immediate enforcement measures.

Authorities must step up efforts to ensure legal compliance and protect Koppal’s tourism integrity.
