In a refreshing twist to the typical migration story, an American man, Elliot Rosenberg, chose to leave the US and settle down in India—achieving both financial independence and personal happiness.

While millions of Indians dream of moving to the US for better job prospects and lifestyle upgrades, Rosenberg made the unconventional choice to shift in the opposite direction. Sharing his journey on LinkedIn, he revealed how relocating to India 12 years ago drastically improved his financial situation and quality of life.

Rosenberg explained, “Most finance experts preach budgeting, investing, and multiple income streams to reach financial freedom. But in reality, America is insanely expensive!” Instead, he found a solution by moving to India, where the cost of living is a fraction of US expenses.

Not only did the move help his wallet, but it also enriched his personal life. In India, he met his wife, bonded with her family, learned Hindi, and launched two businesses. Now residing in a serene beach town, weekends for him include surfing, jungle hikes, and potluck gatherings.

He gave a breakdown of his monthly costs:

  • ₹54,400 rent for a fully-furnished 2BHK by a river, with pool & gym access

  • ₹21,600 on groceries

  • ₹6,900 for household help six times a week

  • ₹860 per personal training session

  • Rosenberg concluded that money stress is no longer part of their life, though he retains his US citizenship, visiting annually.
