A simple desire to lose weight and enjoy healthier desserts has transformed into a thriving business for entrepreneur Galvin Sng, whose keto-friendly ice cream venture now serves customers seeking diabetic, gluten-free and low-sugar alternatives.

The journey began in 2019 after a routine health check-up revealed that Sng was at risk of developing fatty liver disease. Determined to improve his health, he returned to a ketogenic diet and soon found himself craving ice cream.

Unable to find recipes that matched his taste, he decided to create his own.

From kitchen experiment to growing business

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Sng began experimenting with keto-friendly ice cream recipes at home. His first creation, a chocolate-flavoured ice cream, proved an instant success among family and friends.

As he shared the product with online keto communities, orders started flowing in. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into a small business operating from his home kitchen.

Over time, demand expanded beyond those following keto diets. Customers included people managing diabetes, recovering from illnesses and consumers simply looking for healthier dessert options.

Recognising the growing interest, Sng and his wife Charmaine launched Ketojiak, a speciality ice cream store focused on diabetic-, keto- and celiac-friendly products.

Building a business through challenges

The couple opened their first outlet in 2023, taking what they described as a significant leap of faith. Despite limited resources, the business steadily grew, supported by a loyal customer base and increasing demand for healthier food alternatives.

The journey was not without setbacks. In 2025, Galvin suffered a stroke while working at the store. Prompt medical treatment enabled a full recovery, and the couple resumed operations after a temporary closure.

The experience reinforced their determination to continue growing the business.

Looking to the future

In early 2026, Ketojiak moved into a larger location to accommodate its expanding customer base.

Today, the business represents more than just ice cream. For the founders, it is a story of entrepreneurship, resilience and turning a personal health challenge into a venture that serves a wider community.
