Scented candles are emerging as a promising small-business opportunity in India, with home-based makers using social media to turn handmade products into online sales.

Once mainly associated with lighting homes before electricity became widely available, candles are now largely purchased for decoration, gifting, fragrance and creating a particular atmosphere. This changing consumer interest has encouraged makers to experiment with different waxes, fragrances, shapes, containers and packaging.

Personalisation is helping makers stand out

Customisation has become an important part of the business. Customers can request specific colours, fragrances, shapes, names, messages and packaging for birthdays, weddings, festivals and personal use.

Kittu Pande, founder of Trysa Candle in Pune, started her business in 2024. She said demand varies according to occasions and festive seasons, while everyday use and gifting remain important reasons for purchases.

Jar candles in different fragrances are among her products, with lavender currently the best-selling fragrance. The business also offers candles starting at INR 30, giving customers options at different price points.

Social media is becoming the shop window

For many home-based makers, platforms such as Instagram provide an affordable way to showcase products, introduce collections and communicate directly with potential buyers.

However, selling candles online also requires trust. Customers cannot smell a product before buying it, making clear descriptions, photographs, fragrance details and customer reviews particularly important.

Turning a hobby into a business takes planning

Anjali Mittal, founder of laviishcandles in Delhi, said customers increasingly seek candles for particular occasions and personal preferences. She also highlighted the challenge of maintaining consistent quality as orders increase.

Behind the attractive finished products, makers must manage wax, fragrance oils, wicks, jars, packaging, orders and deliveries. Each candle also requires testing because wax type, wick size and fragrance concentration can influence how it burns.

Demand can rise and fall with the seasons

Orders may increase around festivals, weddings and birthdays before slowing during quieter periods. Makers therefore need to manage inventory carefully while dealing with changing raw material costs.

A solo entrepreneur may also have to handle production, packaging, photography, marketing, customer service, accounts and deliveries.

For consumers, scented candles are increasingly part of everyday routines. Mehak Ramzan, who works at Accenture in Noida, said she uses different fragrances depending on her mood, particularly while reading or relaxing after work.

As demand for personalised gifting, home decor and fragrance products grows, scented candles show how a simple handmade product can develop into a small online enterprise when creativity is combined with consistency, customer understanding and careful business planning.
