Peak summer heat can be difficult for home gardens across India, especially in terrace gardens and balconies exposed to direct sunlight throughout the day. By May, many plants begin to wilt as soil loses moisture quickly, forcing gardeners to water repeatedly.
However, gardening experts say the solution is not always using more water, but helping the soil retain moisture for longer. A few simple changes can protect plants from heat stress and keep gardens healthy during extreme summer conditions.
Mulching helps lock moisture
One of the easiest methods is covering soil with mulch. Materials like dry leaves, coconut husk, straw, or grass clippings create a protective layer that reduces evaporation and keeps roots cooler.
Mulching also helps control weed growth, allowing plants to absorb more nutrients and water.
Watering at the right time matters
Experts recommend watering plants early in the morning when temperatures are lower. This allows water to soak deeper into the soil before the day becomes too hot.
Deep watering is considered more effective than frequent light watering because it encourages stronger root growth. Evening watering can also help, though leaves should not remain excessively wet overnight.
Improve soil naturally
Adding compost, cow dung manure, vermicompost, or cocopeat improves the soil’s ability to hold moisture. Healthy soil remains cooler and supports better plant growth during harsh summers.
For potted plants, larger containers are recommended because they retain moisture longer than small pots. Clay pots are also preferred over thin plastic pots as they stay cooler in direct sunlight.
Shade and slow watering can protect plants
Providing temporary shade using green nets, bamboo screens, or cotton cloth during afternoon heat can reduce moisture loss significantly.
Slow watering methods like drip irrigation or homemade bottle drip systems also help water reach roots gradually without wastage.
Avoid disturbing soil frequently
Gardeners are advised not to loosen or dig soil repeatedly during summer, as this exposes cooler layers to heat and increases moisture loss.
Grouping plants according to their water needs can also make watering more efficient and prevent overwatering.
With proper care and simple gardening techniques, plants can continue growing well even during India’s hottest summer months
