Puttur: Department of English, St Philomena College Puttur organised an insightful workshop on Samuel Beckett’s iconic tragicomedy play, ‘Waiting for Godot.’

The workshop was inaugurated by lighting the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing the quest for knowledge and enlightenment which was aptly executed by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, the esteemed Principal of the College.

Krithi KN, a student in the second year of B.Sc., delivered a convincing paper presentation. Her insights into ‘Waiting for Godot’ left a lasting impression and sparked engaging discussions among the participants.

The workshop gained even more depth with the erudite resource person, Rev. Fr Stany Pinto, Campus Director of St Philomena College Puttur and former assistant professor in the department of English. His wealth of knowledge and eloquence enriched the understanding of the social, political, philosophical and religious interpretations in Samuel Beckett’s masterwork, ‘Waiting for Godot’. He also sheds light on the themes of existentialism, the human condition, dark humour and the sense of futility that pervades the actions of the characters.

Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, in his presidential remarks, pointed out the intricacies Samuel Beckett unfolds about the purpose of human existence, the search for meaning and the nature of hope.  ‘Waiting for Godot’ was not just a play, but an opportunity for intellectual exploration and profound reflection. It challenges its audience to reflect on the uncertainty of life and the human need to find meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. The Department of English excelled in its mission to ignite the minds of the students and foster a deeper appreciation of the literary arts, he said.

The program commenced with a prayer performed by Performing Arts Students. Bharathi S Rai, HoD of English, extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the significance of the workshop. Sushma Crasta, Department of English compered the programme. Students of B.Sc are the beneficiaries of the Workshop.
