The Visvesvaraya Canal (VC) in Mandya has been the site of 46 tragic deaths over the past six years due to accidents, prompting authorities to enhance road safety measures. Mandya MLA Ravikumar extended financial assistance to the families of the most recent victims, with district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy assuring efforts to secure additional compensation from the chief minister.
Expressing sorrow over the repeated fatalities, Cheluvarayaswamy urged motorists, especially young drivers, to remain vigilant. “No amount of compensation can heal a family’s grief,” he stated, stressing that reckless driving, not just poor roads, contributes to accidents.
To curb further mishaps, the government has initiated the construction of barriers along the canal. The minister acknowledged project delays due to contractor inefficiencies but assured swift completion. Instructions have been given to expedite approval and enforce safety enhancements at accident-prone locations, including Pandavapura.
