Mysuru: The devastating landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, have claimed the lives of 18 people from Karnataka. On Friday, five more bodies were recovered: Gurumallan (60), Appanna (39), Divya (35), Ashwini (13), and Jithu (11) from Ukkalagere of T Narsipur taluk in Mysuru district, who were residents of Chooralmala in Wayanad. The search continues for Rathnamma (45) of Chamarajanagar taluk and Sabitha (43) from Ukkalagere.
Relatives of two victims from Mandya district were distraught as the bodies of Leelavathi (55) and her grandson Nihal (2.5) were returned to Kaththaragatta village in KR Pet taluk late Thursday night. They were cremated in the early hours of Friday. Leelavathi and Nihal were visiting her son Anil Kumar and daughter-in-law Jhansi Rani in Mundakkai when the landslide struck.
KR Pet MLA H T Manjunath and Mandya district in-charge minister N Chaluvarayaswamy visited the bereaved family and offered condolences. Chaluvarayaswamy assured the family of a Rs 5 lakh compensation for Leelavathi’s death and additional support for Nihal’s family. He also promised medical support for injured family members Anil, Jhansi Rani, and Devaraju, who are being treated in Meppadi.
The minister pledged to assist the affected families with jobs, housing under the Ashraya scheme if needed, and any lost documentation issues. The Karnataka government is committed to providing comprehensive support to those impacted by this tragedy.
