Mandya: The ideals of perseverance, devotion, and selfless service were at the heart of Bhagiratha Jayanti celebrations held at the Kaveri Auditorium in the Zilla Panchayat on Sunday. Mandya Tahsildar Shivakumar Biradar inaugurated the event, urging people—especially the younger generation—to follow the inspiring values exemplified by Maharshi Bhagiratha.
Biradar described Bhagiratha as a symbol of determination and focus, whose efforts to bring the River Ganga to earth remain a shining example of committed public service. “His mission was not just personal redemption but a spiritual boon to all living beings,” Biradar stated. He also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to uplifting educationally backward communities through the establishment of schools, hostels, and community halls.
A highlight of the program was a special lecture by retired Social Welfare Department officer N Narasimhamurthy, who narrated Bhagiratha’s legendary story. He recounted how Bhagiratha, following his guru’s guidance, performed penance—first to Brahma, and then to Lord Shiva, who released Ganga to earth through his matted locks to prevent her fierce descent from destroying the land.
“Bhagiratha’s journey is not just about divine intervention,” said Narasimhamurthy, “but also about unwavering sacrifice and dedication for the greater good.”
The celebration concluded with the felicitation of meritorious students from the community, honoring academic achievements and encouraging future excellence.
