Mandya district is witnessing a declining sex ratio due to female foeticide, with current figures at 930-940 females per 1,000 males, below the ideal range of 970-980. To address this issue, the 87th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana (Dec 20-22) in Mandya will feature a seminar focused on the societal and health impacts of female foeticide.
Key Issues:
- Illegal Practices: Strong gender preferences, especially for a male child, drive couples to seek illegal sex determination services. Unauthorised practitioners often conduct unsafe abortions, posing significant health risks.
- Health Concerns: Many women delaying pregnancy registration face life-threatening complications due to unsafe procedures, worsened by widespread anaemia.
- Legal Measures: Authorities have taken action against illegal practitioners, including arrests, but the problem persists.
Public Awareness Campaign:
The seminar aims to promote gender equality and strengthen law enforcement through public discussions. Its inclusion in a major literary event underscores the urgency of combating female foeticide and fostering societal change.
