Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are anticipated to visit Mandya in May-June next year to inaugurate the ‘Mother Earth’ monument in Hallagere village. This Rs. 100 crore monument, led by the SCOPE Foundation and NRI Dr. Lakshminarasimha Murthy (father of U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy), is dedicated to spirituality and environmental appreciation.
Mandya MLA G. Ravikumar confirmed that American Embassy officials have reviewed the site and suggested infrastructure improvements, including road, electricity, and water facilities. The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) and Public Works Department have allocated Rs. 20 crore each to support these enhancements, and three helipads are under construction to facilitate the VVIP visit.
During the event, the Obamas will lay the foundation stone for an International Yoga and Meditation Centre. Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama is also expected to attend. The Mother Earth Centre for Science of Spirituality aims to inspire non-ritualistic spiritual practices to honor Earth. With a monumental 11-foot Mother Earth statue and philosopher sculptures, the center will promote unity and gratitude for the planet.
Dr. Vivek Murthy, the current U.S. Surgeon General and a Harvard and Yale graduate, previously served in this role under President Obama.
