Mandya: What initially appeared to be a mysterious murder with few leads was solved with the help of Simbha, a police sniffer dog whose scent-tracking abilities led investigators to the accused in the murder of a young carpenter near the KRS bus stand in Srirangapatna.

The victim, Rakesh, a carpenter in his mid-20s from KR Pet, was found bludgeoned to death on June 6. His motorcycle was recovered a short distance from the crime scene, leaving investigators with little evidence to identify the killer.

Initial suspicion pointed elsewhere

Police initially suspected an honour killing after call records revealed that Rakesh had been speaking to his girlfriend for over an hour shortly before his death. Investigators believed her relatives, who allegedly opposed their relationship, could have been involved.

However, the investigation took a dramatic turn after Simbha examined the crime scene.

Simbha leads police to crucial clue

After sniffing Rakesh’s body, Simbha moved towards the victim’s motorcycle and repeatedly barked near it before following a scent trail along the main road. The dog eventually stopped near a few roadside shops, indicating that the suspect had passed through the area.

Mandya Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani VJ said the dog’s behaviour prompted investigators to explore a different angle instead of focusing solely on the victim’s personal relationship.

Further investigation revealed that Rakesh had spent the day working in Mysuru with his assistant, Ambarish, who had gone missing after the murder.

Accused arrested while fleeing

Police traced Ambarish near Akkihebbal village in KR Pet while he was travelling on a bus bound for Tamil Nadu.

When he was brought to the KRS Police Station, Simbha immediately barked at him, strengthening investigators’ suspicions. Officers also found bloodstains on Ambarish’s trousers and slippers, which forensic tests later confirmed matched Rakesh’s blood.

During questioning, Ambarish allegedly confessed to the crime. Police said the two had been drinking together before an argument broke out after Rakesh allegedly refused to give him money for dinner. In a fit of rage, Ambarish is accused of fatally attacking the carpenter.

Investigators said the accused unknowingly left behind a scent trail while buying snacks after the murder, enabling Simbha to help solve the case.
