In an extraordinary act of courage and compassion, the family of a 19-year-old youth from Mandya district donated his organs after he was declared brain-dead following a road accident, saving three lives.

Darshan, a resident of Chikka Mandya village, met with an accident on February 22 while riding his two-wheeler. He reportedly fell off the vehicle and sustained injuries. As the injuries did not initially appear serious, he returned home and went to sleep.

Sudden deterioration after minor fall

Later, his condition worsened, prompting his family to rush him to hospital. Doctors discovered a severe internal brain haemorrhage. Despite medical efforts, he was declared brain-dead.

Amid unimaginable grief, the family chose to donate his organs, enabling three critically ill patients to receive life-saving transplants. Hospital authorities coordinated the procedures in accordance with organ transplant protocols.

Medical experts emphasised that timely organ donation can transform tragedies into life-saving opportunities for others. Karnataka has been steadily strengthening its organ donation framework under the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization guidelines.

A family’s brave and selfless decision

Health officials praised the family’s decision, describing it as a powerful reminder of humanity and social responsibility. Organ donation remains governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, which ensures ethical and transparent procedures.

Authorities reiterated the importance of road safety, especially for two-wheeler riders, and urged the public to seek immediate medical attention even after seemingly minor accidents.

Darshan’s family, in their moment of deepest sorrow, chose to give hope to others — a gesture that will be remembered as an enduring act of kindness.
