Mysuru: Landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, have claimed the lives of four individuals from Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts. The victims include Puttasiddi (62) and Rani (50) from Chamarajanagar, as well as Leelavathi and her two-and-a-half-year-old grandson Nihal from Mandya. Their bodies were recovered from the disaster site.
Puttasiddi, who had lived in Chooralmala village, Wayanad, for 30 years, was among the deceased. The search continues for Rajan (50) and Rajani (45) from Chamarajanagar taluk. Swamishetty from Gundlupet taluk, who was visiting relatives in Meppadi, suffered minor injuries and is being treated at Vythri Taluk Hospital.
Media reports indicate the deaths of Rathnamma (45) and Rajendra (50) from Erasawadi village, Chamarajanagar district, though official confirmation is pending. Chamarajanagar Tahsildar Girija and Gundlupet Tahsildar Ramesh Kumar are stationed in Wayanad to gather information on the missing persons.
Ramesh Kumar visited the relief camp at St. Joseph UP School in Meppadi and met Vinod and his family from Chamarajanagar, who are currently staying there.
Additionally, eleven individuals from Mandya are missing. This includes Jhansirani, her husband Anil Kumar, and Anil’s father Devaraju, who were living in Mandya but were working in Wayanad. Nine more people from Malavalli taluk who visited Wayanad are also unaccounted for, though this has not been officially confirmed.
In response to heavy rainfall, the Chamarajanagar District Administration has banned tourist entry to Wellesley Bridge, Shivanasamudra, Bharachukki, and Hogenakkal Falls from July 31 to August 2 due to the anticipated increase in water discharge from the Kabini and KRS reservoirs.
