Mangaluru: The Mangaluru South police arrested an accused who had been absconding after failing to appear before the court in connection with multiple criminal cases registered against him.

The arrested individual has been identified as Mahamad Ashraf alias Ajju alias Sameer, a resident of Mavinakatte in Ajilamogaru village of Beltangady taluk.

According to police sources, the accused had remained absconding for a considerable period after repeatedly failing to attend court proceedings related to several criminal cases. Following continuous efforts to trace him, the police succeeded in apprehending the accused and taking him into custody.

Officials said the arrest was carried out as part of ongoing efforts by the Mangaluru South police to track down absconding accused persons and ensure their appearance before the court. Police teams had reportedly gathered information about the movements of the accused before successfully detaining him.

Produced before court

After his arrest, Mahamad Ashraf was produced before the jurisdictional court on Wednesday. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody for further legal proceedings.

Police officials stated that the accused was wanted in connection with multiple criminal cases, though detailed information regarding the nature of the offences has not yet been officially disclosed.

The arrest is being viewed as part of intensified action by city police against habitual offenders and individuals attempting to evade judicial procedures.

Police continue crackdown on absconding accused

Authorities said special focus is being given to tracing accused persons who fail to appear before courts despite summons and warrants. Police departments across Dakshina Kannada have recently increased efforts to execute pending warrants and monitor repeat offenders.

Senior officials noted that absconding accused persons often delay legal proceedings and create hurdles in the justice delivery system. Regular drives are therefore being conducted to identify and arrest such individuals.

The Mangaluru South police have continued further investigation into the pending cases linked to the accused while verifying additional records related to his criminal background.

Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information about individuals involved in criminal activities or those evading court proceedings.
