Agumbe: Hairpin bends on the Agumbe Ghat section of National Highway 169A have developed potholes and craters, affecting vehicular movement along one of Karnataka’s important links between the coastal and Malnad regions.
The deterioration of the road has become a concern for motorists using the steep and winding ghat section connecting Agumbe with the Udupi side and Thirthahalli. The road condition is particularly significant because NH-169A serves as a key connection between the coastal belt and the interior parts of Shivamogga district.
Potholes emerge along hairpin bends
The damaged road surface on the hairpin bends has reportedly made movement difficult for vehicles travelling through the ghat.
Agumbe Ghat is known for its steep gradients and numerous sharp curves. Drivers have to negotiate the bends carefully even under normal conditions, and potholes and large craters on the carriageway can further complicate vehicle movement.
The road is used by buses, goods vehicles, cars and two-wheelers travelling between the coastal region and the Malnad area. Any deterioration on the hairpin sections can therefore affect both local and through traffic.
NH-169A connects the Malpe-Udupi region with Thirthahalli through Hebri and Agumbe. The highway is about 87 km long and includes the Agumbe Ghat section through the Western Ghats.
Poor rainfall does not prevent road damage
The condition of the road has drawn attention because the region has reportedly experienced deficient rainfall this year.
Road damage in a ghat section can be linked to several factors, including repeated vehicle loading, deterioration of the road surface and water entering existing cracks. Once the pavement weakens, traffic can accelerate the formation and enlargement of potholes.

Agumbe route is important for coastal-Malnad connectivity
NH-169A plays an important role in connecting Udupi district with the Malnad region.
The highway begins around Malpe in Udupi and runs through Udupi, Manipal, Perdoor and Hebri before climbing towards Agumbe and continuing to Thirthahalli.
The Agumbe section is particularly distinctive because the highway crosses the Western Ghats through a series of steep bends. The route is also used by visitors travelling towards Agumbe and surrounding forest and hill regions.
The highway’s narrow and winding sections have historically presented challenges for large vehicles. Road surface damage on these portions can add another difficulty for motorists.

The condition of the Agumbe Ghat road comes as widening and improvement works are being pursued on parts of NH-169A.
The Malpe-Hebri section has been identified for widening, while the highway’s Agumbe stretch remains a distinct ghat-road section because of its mountainous terrain.
Improvement of the wider NH-169A corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity between Udupi and the interior districts. However, maintaining existing road sections remains important while larger infrastructure projects progress.
Need for attention to damaged stretches
The emergence of potholes on the Agumbe Ghat hairpin bends highlights the need for timely road maintenance on mountainous highways.
Unlike straight road sections, repairs on ghat roads have to account for steep gradients, sharp curves, drainage and the movement of vehicles around bends. Temporary filling of potholes may not address underlying pavement problems if the damaged base is not properly treated.
For motorists, the immediate concern remains safe passage through the affected bends. Proper maintenance and timely restoration of damaged portions would help maintain smoother traffic movement along this important coastal-Malnad corridor.
