Mangaluru: A vigilant citizen’s prompt action helped the Mangaluru police arrest a woman wanted in a previous housebreak case on Wednesday morning. The incident took place near the Gorigudda area when a local resident noticed suspicious activity and immediately informed the police control room.
Citizen alert leads to swift action
At around 9:45 am, Mangaluru resident Deekshit spotted four women behaving suspiciously near Gorigudda. Without delay, he alerted the police helpline (112), providing the location and a description of the women. Responding promptly, a police patrol team was dispatched to the area and reached the spot within five minutes. Officers detained all four women for preliminary questioning.
Known offender identified
During interrogation, one of the women was identified as Sivagami, a resident of Holenarsipur in Hassan district. Police confirmed that Sivagami was a known offender in a housebreak case registered earlier at the Kadri police station. She had been absconding for several weeks after failing to appear during the ongoing investigation.
Police subsequently arrested Sivagami and produced her before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody. Authorities said the arrest marks an important step in resolving the pending case.
No record found against others
The other three women detained at the scene were questioned and found to have no prior criminal record, police officials said. They were released after verification. Law enforcement officials noted that Sivagami had allegedly been part of a network involved in petty thefts and housebreaks across different areas of the city. Investigations are underway to determine whether she was planning another offence at the time of her arrest.
Police appreciate citizen alertness
Police officials praised the quick thinking and vigilance of Deekshit, whose immediate action enabled them to catch the absconding accused. “The citizen’s presence of mind and prompt reporting made a crucial difference. His call helped prevent a possible crime,” a senior officer said.
The department also reiterated that public cooperation plays a vital role in crime prevention. “We urge people to stay alert, report any suspicious movement, and trust that every tip-off is taken seriously,” the officer added.
Encouraging community vigilance
The incident underscores the growing emphasis on community policing in Karnataka, where authorities have been encouraging residents to participate actively in maintaining neighbourhood safety. With the help of public alerts, Mangaluru police have in recent months foiled several theft attempts and tracked down missing suspects.
Police said they plan to recognise the citizen formally for his contribution to public safety. “It’s important that citizens know their role matters — one responsible call can go a long way in keeping our communities secure,” the officer noted.
Conclusion
The swift arrest of the absconding woman in Mangaluru demonstrates the effectiveness of coordination between citizens and law enforcement. Officials have once again reminded residents to use the 112 helpline or nearby police stations to report unusual activities without hesitation, reinforcing the message that vigilance and timely reporting are key to ensuring community safety.
