In a significant move to tackle traffic congestion in Udupi, work on the long-awaited underpass and flyover at Ambalpady Junction on National Highway 66 is moving forward at a rapid pace. On Wednesday, the construction team successfully installed the first batch of girders for the flyover portion of the project, marking a major milestone.

The project, valued at Rs 23.53 crore, was awarded to Karla Constructions and began on December 16 last year. The process involves the installation of 20 massive girders, which were carefully lifted and placed on pre-constructed pillars using four high-capacity cranes.

With the girders now in place, the next phase will see the construction of the concrete slab. According to sources at Karla Constructions, they aim to open the lower deck of the flyover for traffic between Brahmagiri and Ambalpady by the end of this month, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters.

As work continues, traffic is being diverted: vehicles heading from Brahmagiri to Ambalpady are redirected via the Kinni Mulki Welcome Arch, while those traveling from Ambalpady to Udupi are using the Karavali Bypass.

Scheduled for completion by May 2026, the flyover will span 1.2 kilometers, with a width of 22 meters, and will feature six lanes. The underpass will connect Brahmagiri to Kadegar with a central pillar and a total width of 30 meters.

Locals are optimistic that the new infrastructure will significantly reduce the chronic traffic jams at this busy junction.
