In celebration of International Mother’s Day, a special literary event titled ‘Asmita’, highlighting women’s contributions to literature, was held on Sunday, May 11 at the World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar, Mangaluru.

The event was jointly organised by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, and the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation. The programme served as a platform to showcase women-centric writings, with a strong focus on themes of motherhood and feminine identity.

Wilma, Yuva Puraskar awardee from Bantwal, presided over the event and captivated the audience with her poetry that beautifully explored the emotions and experiences tied to motherhood.

The literary segment featured:

  • Diana Sharel Lobo and Mary Salomi D’Souza, who recited soulful poems
  • Felcy Lobo, who presented a thoughtful essay
  • Smitha Shenoy, who narrated a compelling short story

Renowned Konkani poet Melvyn Rodrigues, who also serves as the coordinator of the Sahitya Akademi Konkani Advisory Board, introduced the event and shared insights into the Akademi’s efforts in promoting regional literature, especially women’s writing through initiatives like Asmita.

Dr B Devadas Pai, Chief Administrative Officer of the World Konkani Centre, formally welcomed the attendees. The event was compered by H M Pernal, journalist, writer, and Akademi Advisory Board member, who also delivered the vote of thanks.

The event drew writers and literature lovers from Mangaluru, Udupi, and Kerala, making it a memorable and enriching celebration of women’s literary expression.
