In a landmark ruling, the Dakshina Kannada District Consumer Court has ordered tech giant ASUS to refund Rs 1,09,990 to a customer for delivering a defective laptop, with 6% interest payable within 45 days. Non-compliance could trigger civil and criminal proceedings against the company.

The case was filed by Dr Arun Prasad from Mudaripane, Ullal taluk, who purchased the high-end ASUS laptop along with a paid extended warranty. Just six months after purchase, the device developed severe issues, including a cracked LCD screen and other technical faults.

Despite raising repeated complaints via calls, emails, and even social media, ASUS failed to offer a fix or refund, and allegedly blocked the complainant’s Twitter handle—further aggravating the situation.

Left with no option, Dr Prasad turned to the consumer court, which found ASUS guilty of delivering a product with inherent manufacturing defects and offering substandard after-sales service.

The court not only ordered a full refund but also directed the company to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation for mental agony and service deficiency, along with Rs 10,000 for legal costs.

The complainant was represented by Advocate Aravind V of Apex Juris, Mangaluru, with Prashanth ST of Shanti Infotech, Sullia, providing technical analysis.
