Bantwal: In a remarkable and heartening incident, a pregnant woman safely delivered a baby boy inside a train coach at B C Road railway station in Bantwal on Sunday night, thanks to the swift response of fellow passengers, railway officials, and medical personnel.

The woman, identified as Ponnamma, a resident of Savanoor in Mysuru, was travelling on the Mangaluru–Bengaluru train when she went into labour shortly after the train departed from Mangaluru. What could have turned into a medical emergency was handled with compassion and efficiency, resulting in a safe delivery.

Passengers step in during critical moment

According to sources, Ponnamma began experiencing intense labour pains while the train was in motion. Noticing her distress, a group of Muslim women travelling on the same train quickly came to her aid. They comforted her, created space within the coach, and promptly alerted railway authorities about the situation.

Their timely intervention ensured that immediate steps were taken to manage the emergency. Passengers reportedly worked together to maintain calm and provide basic assistance until professional help could arrive.

Train halted, medical team rushed to scene

Responding without delay, railway officials decided to halt the train at B C Road railway station to facilitate medical assistance. The train, which arrived at around 7:20 pm, was held at the station to prioritise the safety of the expectant mother.

A medical team from Somayaji Hospital was quickly mobilised and reached the station within minutes. The rapid response was made possible by Lokesh, a driver of the Sujnana ambulance service in Kalladka, who transported doctors to the station within just three minutes of receiving the emergency call.

The doctors boarded the train coach and conducted the delivery under constrained conditions. Despite the challenges of working in a non-clinical environment, the team successfully ensured a safe childbirth.

Safe delivery inside train coach

Ponnamma gave birth to a healthy baby boy inside the train coach, marking a moment of relief and joy for everyone involved. Witnesses described the scene as emotional, with passengers applauding the efforts of the medical team and those who assisted during the critical moments.

Following the delivery, immediate arrangements were made to transport both mother and child to a medical facility for further care. The newborn was taken to Somayaji Hospital in the Sujnana ambulance, while Ponnamma was transported separately in the hospital’s ambulance.

Further treatment in Mangaluru

After initial examination at Somayaji Hospital, doctors advised that both the mother and the newborn required additional observation and specialised care. They were subsequently shifted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment.

Medical sources have confirmed that both Ponnamma and her baby are in stable condition. However, they remain under observation as a precautionary measure.

Community effort ensures positive outcome

The successful handling of the situation was the result of coordinated efforts by multiple individuals and agencies. Local residents, including Samad from Kaikamba, played a role in facilitating arrangements at the station. Personnel from the Bantwal City Police station and members of the public also assisted in managing the situation effectively.

Additionally, a team from the Mangaluru Railway Police arrived at the scene to document the incident and gather details.

Sources indicated that Ponnamma is believed to be an employee at a private hospital in Mangaluru, although official confirmation is still awaited.

Train resumes journey after delay

To ensure the well-being of the mother and child, the train remained stationed at B C Road for approximately one hour. It eventually resumed its journey at around 8:20 pm after all necessary arrangements had been completed.

While the delay affected the train’s schedule, passengers reportedly expressed understanding, acknowledging the importance of prioritising human life over punctuality.
