Mangaluru: Vehicular traffic has commenced on the newly completed third bridge over the Netravati River on BC Road. The bridge, which marks a significant milestone in the development of the four-lane highway from BC Road to Addahole, was opened after a trial run on Friday.

The new bridge, constructed by KNR Constructions, is 13.5 metres wide and stretches 386 metres in length. Built at a height of 16 metres from the river, it features 11 pillars spaced 38 metres apart. With this new addition, vehicles can now use separate bridges for incoming and outgoing traffic, reducing the possibility of head-on encounters and easing congestion.

Enhanced connectivity

The completion of the bridge aligns with the larger highway expansion project. While vehicles have started plying smoothly, motorists are cautioned to drive carefully near the Sagar Hall stretch, where the approach road still requires finishing work.

The adjoining older bridge, previously a critical connection, has suffered damage and requires immediate maintenance. Authorities are urged to address this to ensure continued safe use.

Progress on other flyovers

Meanwhile, the Panemangalore flyover has already opened for traffic, and the Melkar flyover is expected to be operational by the end of November. However, challenges remain on the Melkar-Kalladka road section, where widening work is ongoing, potentially causing delays for motorists.

A bridge with history

BC Road now boasts three bridges in one location. The oldest, built during British rule in 1916, was a vital connection but struggled to accommodate the growing traffic of its time. The second bridge, constructed in 2002-03, facilitated two-lane traffic. The new bridge, opened on November 15, 2024, now exclusively serves vehicles heading out of BC Road, while the older bridge is reserved for incoming traffic.

Local residents expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure improvements, anticipating smoother commutes and reduced travel times.
