Bhatkal: A historic victory in the United States Senate election has brought celebrations and pride to the coastal town of Bhatkal in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan has drawn attention to the town because of his wife, Dr Sarah Jukaku, whose family traces its roots to Bhatkal.
El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the November 3 election, becoming the first Muslim American elected to the United States Senate, according to reports. His victory has special significance for the Jukaku family, which has a long-standing connection with Bhatkal and a history of contributions to the region.
Bhatkal connection through wife Sarah Jukaku
Sarah Jukaku belongs to a prominent family from Bhatkal. Her grandfather, Jukaku Shamsuddin, was a well-known lawyer and politician who served as Deputy Finance Minister in the erstwhile Mysore State government under Chief Minister B.D. Jatti during the 1950s.
Shamsuddin is remembered for his contribution to Bhatkal’s development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, education, roads and electricity. He was regarded as an influential figure in the town’s public life, and his legacy continues through institutions and public spaces associated with his name.
The Jukaku family belongs to the Nawayath community, an established coastal Muslim community with historical links to trade and settlements along the southern Indian coast. Over the years, members of the family moved to different cities and countries for education and professional opportunities, while maintaining their connection with Bhatkal.
Sarah’s family celebrates the victory
The election result has been welcomed with pride by Sarah’s relatives in Karnataka. Family members reportedly followed the election closely and prayed for El-Sayed’s victory.
Speaking to the media, Sarah’s cousin expressed happiness over the achievement and recalled the family’s connection with Bhatkal. He also spoke about the respect the family continues to have for their grandfather, Jukaku Shamsuddin, whose work contributed to the town’s development.
The family has reportedly maintained its links with Bhatkal through visits and gatherings over the years. Sarah’s father, Dr Jukaku S. Tayeb, was born and raised in Bhatkal before moving to Bengaluru for medical education. He graduated from Bangalore Medical College in 1976 and later moved abroad, eventually settling in the United States.
A journey from Bhatkal to American politics
Sarah and El-Sayed met while studying at the University of Michigan. Sarah pursued a career in medicine, while El-Sayed studied medicine and later public health. He also received a Rhodes Scholarship and pursued further studies at the University of Oxford.
El-Sayed previously worked in public health administration, including serving as director of the Detroit Health Department and the Wayne County health department. He later entered electoral politics, campaigning on issues including affordable healthcare and economic concerns.
Sarah remained involved in her husband’s campaign and appeared alongside him at public events. The couple have two daughters.
A milestone with a Karnataka connection
El-Sayed’s victory has attracted attention beyond the United States because of the connection to Sarah’s family and its history in Bhatkal. For residents and relatives in the coastal town, the result represents a moment of pride, linking a family with deep local roots to a landmark political achievement overseas.
The victory has also brought renewed attention to Jukaku Shamsuddin’s contribution to Bhatkal. His family’s journey across generations, from public service in the erstwhile Mysore State to a prominent role in an American political milestone, has placed the coastal town in the international spotlight.
