Mangaluru: A broker has been arrested and two police constables have been suspended following the discovery of alleged irregularities in the police verification process for labourers seeking employment within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru.

Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the action was taken after an internal investigation revealed that police verification certificates had allegedly been issued without following mandatory procedures.

The case has raised concerns over compliance with verification protocols, which are intended to ensure transparency and authenticity in background checks conducted for employment purposes.

Investigation uncovers procedural violations

Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated that the investigation found that a broker had allegedly secured police verification certificates for certain labourers through the involvement of police personnel.

According to the findings, the certificates were reportedly issued without conducting the mandatory field verification process. Investigators also found that the documents did not carry the signature of the concerned police inspector, a requirement under the prescribed verification procedure.

The alleged bypassing of official processes enabled verification certificates to be obtained without completing the necessary checks, prompting departmental action against those involved.

Broker arrested, constables suspended

Following the investigation, police registered a case against the broker allegedly responsible for facilitating the irregularities. The accused was subsequently arrested and taken into custody for further questioning.

The two constables suspected of assisting in the verification process have been placed under suspension pending the outcome of a detailed departmental inquiry.

Police officials said the suspensions were ordered to ensure a fair and impartial investigation while examining the extent of their involvement in the alleged misconduct.

Labourers reportedly unaware of irregularities

Preliminary investigations indicate that the labourers involved were economically disadvantaged individuals seeking employment opportunities in the region.

According to police, there is currently no evidence suggesting that the labourers themselves were involved in the alleged wrongdoing. Investigators believe the broker may have exploited the verification process and used the cooperation of the suspended personnel to obtain the certificates.

Officials are examining whether similar instances occurred in other cases and whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged malpractice.

Further investigation underway

Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the investigation is continuing and that additional details are expected to emerge as inquiries progress.

Police are reviewing records related to the issuance of verification certificates and are examining whether established procedures were bypassed in other cases as well.

Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of violating official procedures or abusing their position.

Importance of verification procedures

Police verification certificates are often required for employment, tenancy, security-related jobs and other official purposes. The process typically involves field verification and approval by authorised officers to ensure the authenticity of the applicant’s background information.

Officials emphasised that adherence to these procedures is essential to maintain public trust and ensure the integrity of the verification system.

The incident has highlighted the need for stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms to prevent misuse of official processes and safeguard the credibility of police-issued certificates.

Conclusion

The arrest of a broker and suspension of two constables in connection with alleged police verification irregularities has prompted a detailed investigation by Mangaluru Police. While preliminary findings suggest that mandatory procedures were bypassed, authorities have stated that the inquiry remains ongoing and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
