Puttur: Uppinangady police have registered a suo motu case against two private bus conductors who allegedly engaged in a violent clash inside a passenger bus over a dispute related to bus timings, causing panic among passengers, including women and children.

The incident occurred on July 14 and involved conductors of the Arafa and Lakshmi private buses, which operate services between Uppinangady and Mangaluru.

Police initiated legal action on their own after neither of the injured conductors filed a complaint despite receiving treatment at a government hospital.

Dispute allegedly triggered by bus timings

According to police, the altercation stemmed from a disagreement over bus timings between the crews of the two private buses.

During the incident, Naushad, the conductor of the Arafa bus, allegedly entered the Lakshmi bus carrying an iron rod while passengers were still seated inside.

Police alleged that he assaulted the Lakshmi bus conductor, Khalandar alias Shahid, with the iron rod.

Both conductors sustain injuries

Police further stated that during the altercation, Shahid allegedly retaliated by assaulting Naushad with his hands.

As a result of the fight, both conductors sustained injuries and were later admitted to the Puttur Government Hospital for treatment.

Despite the incident, neither of the two men lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Police register suo motu case

Since the alleged assault took place in broad daylight inside a passenger bus and in the presence of members of the public, Uppinangady police decided to initiate legal proceedings on their own.

According to police, the accused allegedly created panic among passengers, including women and children, by engaging in a violent altercation inside the bus and allegedly using a dangerous weapon.

Considering the public nature of the incident and its impact on public peace and safety, police registered a suo motu case and commenced an investigation.

Investigation underway

Police are collecting evidence, including statements from passengers and other witnesses, to establish the sequence of events leading to the clash.

Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the dispute over bus timings and the alleged use of the iron rod during the assault.

Officials said further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over disputes among private bus staff escalating into violence, particularly when passengers are on board, underscoring the need to ensure public safety in public transport services.
