Mangaluru: A major road accident was narrowly avoided on the Kuppepadavu–Kalladi–Poovanibettu–Mangaluru route on Wednesday after a private bus suffered brake failure near Neralike, with the driver’s quick thinking and presence of mind ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.

The incident occurred when a private bus travelling from Kuppepadavu towards Kalladi and Poovanibettu encountered a sudden mechanical failure while negotiating a downward curve near Neralike. The driver, identified as Vasu alias Ammi, immediately sensed the danger and executed an emergency manoeuvre that prevented what could have turned into a serious mishap.

Brake failure at a dangerous downward curve

According to local sources, the bus was descending a curved stretch of road near a hillock when the braking system reportedly failed. Downward curves are considered especially risky in such situations, as vehicles can quickly gain speed and become difficult to control.

Realising that the brakes were not responding, the driver quickly evaluated the road conditions and the surroundings. Instead of panicking, he maintained control of the steering and looked for the safest possible way to bring the vehicle to a halt without endangering passengers or nearby residents.

The stretch where the failure occurred is known to have residential houses on one side and uneven terrain on the other, increasing the potential risk in case of a runaway vehicle.

Driver steers bus into roadside drain to stop vehicle

Witnesses said the driver chose not to turn the bus toward the left side of the road because it slopes downward into a low-lying residential area with several houses. Steering in that direction could have put many lives at risk.

Instead, he diverted the bus toward the right side, aiming for a roadside drain near a hillock. The wheels of the bus became lodged in the drain area, which helped bring the vehicle to a controlled stop. This decisive move prevented the bus from speeding downhill and possibly overturning or crashing into buildings.

Only a few passengers were travelling in the bus at the time of the incident, which also reduced the risk of injuries during the emergency stop.

No injuries reported, vehicle damaged

Fortunately, no passengers or bystanders were injured in the incident. However, the bus sustained visible damage due to the impact and the angle at which it came to rest in the drain.

Local residents and commuters who gathered at the spot praised the driver for his calm response under pressure. Many said that his familiarity with the route and quick judgement played a crucial role in preventing casualties.

Passengers were safely evacuated from the vehicle soon after it stopped. Traffic movement in the area was briefly affected until initial safety measures were taken.

Damaged bus later removed by crane

Authorities and locals coordinated recovery efforts after the incident. A crane was brought to the location to lift the damaged bus from the drain and move it to the roadside. The removal operation was completed without further incident.

Preliminary assessment suggests a mechanical fault led to the brake failure, though a detailed inspection of the vehicle is expected to determine the exact cause. Transport officials are likely to review maintenance records and vehicle fitness compliance as part of standard procedure.

Public praise for responsible driving

The driver’s responsible and timely action has drawn widespread appreciation from the public and regular commuters on the route. Several residents noted that the stretch has multiple curves and slopes, making alert driving and proper vehicle maintenance critical for safety.

The incident has also renewed calls for frequent mechanical checks of public and private transport vehicles, especially those operating on hilly and semi-rural routes.

While the episode caused momentary alarm, it ultimately stood as an example of how alertness and trained response can prevent tragedy even when mechanical systems fail.
