Mangaluru: In a significant judgment underscoring accountability in road safety cases, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) 8th Court in Mangaluru has sentenced a private bus driver to one year and six months of imprisonment in connection with a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a woman pedestrian in 2022. The court also imposed a fine of ₹6,000 on the convicted individual.

The driver, identified as 35-year-old Sharan Kumar, a resident of Padavinangady, was found guilty of causing death by negligence. At the time of the incident, he was operating a private bus involved in the accident that led to the death of Megha Ranjit Pai, aged 34.

Incident at Kottara Chowki

The tragic incident occurred on December 3, 2022, at Kottara Chowki, a busy junction in the city. According to case records, Megha Ranjit Pai was crossing the road from the Kallurti Daivasthana side towards Bhandary Hills Apartment when the accident took place.

A private bus travelling towards Kottara Chowki struck her while she was crossing. The impact caused severe head injuries, leaving her critically injured. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital; however, despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries.

The accident sparked concern among residents about pedestrian safety and traffic discipline in high-density areas of the city, especially at major junctions like Kottara Chowki.

Police investigation and FIR

Following the incident, the Traffic West Police Station in Mangaluru registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the driver. The investigation was carried out by Inspectors Jayananda and Krishnananda G Naik, who gathered evidence, recorded witness statements, and reconstructed the sequence of events leading to the accident.

The police probe concluded that the accident was a result of negligent driving. Based on the findings, a chargesheet was filed against Sharan Kumar, leading to the commencement of trial proceedings in the JMFC 8th Court.

Court proceedings and verdict

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence and examined multiple witnesses to establish the sequence of events and the driver’s negligence. Advocates Geetha Rai and Aaron D’Souza represented the prosecution and argued the case before the court.

After reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments, JMFC 8th Court Judge Fawaz P A delivered the verdict, holding the driver guilty. The court sentenced Sharan Kumar to 18 months of imprisonment and imposed a monetary fine of ₹6,000.

The judgment reflects the judiciary’s firm stance on cases involving reckless or negligent driving that results in loss of life. While the sentence may appear moderate, legal experts note that such convictions reinforce the importance of adhering to traffic laws and exercising caution, particularly in pedestrian zones.

Road safety concerns remain

The case has once again brought attention to ongoing road safety challenges in urban areas like Mangaluru. With increasing vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement, ensuring safety at junctions and crossings remains a critical issue.

Experts emphasise the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, improved infrastructure such as pedestrian crossings and signals, and greater awareness among drivers. Incidents like this highlight how a moment of negligence can result in irreversible consequences for families and communities.

Conclusion

The sentencing of the bus driver marks the culmination of a legal process that began with a tragic loss of life. While justice has been delivered through the court’s verdict, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and vigilance on the roads.

Ensuring safer roads requires collective effort—from authorities enforcing laws to drivers adhering to them and pedestrians exercising caution. Only through sustained commitment can such tragedies be prevented in the future.
