Sullia: A rescue operation by the Fire and Emergency Services Department in Sullia saved a calf that had accidentally fallen into a 15-foot-deep well near the Sonangeri bus stop on Saturday morning. The operation drew appreciation from local residents for the swift and coordinated efforts of the rescue team.

Calf accidentally falls into well

The calf, owned by Yogish, a resident of Sonangeri, is believed to have slipped into the open well while grazing nearby. According to eyewitnesses, the animal’s distressed cries drew the attention of locals, who immediately informed the Sullia Fire Station.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, equipped with ropes and harnesses to carry out the rescue. The narrow opening and depth of the well made the task challenging, but after nearly an hour of careful manoeuvring, the calf was successfully lifted to safety.

Fire and Emergency Services team leads operation

The rescue was led by Fire Station Officer Kiran Kumar S, assisted by personnel Mohammed Rafeeq, Chandrashekar Naik, Sanjeeva Gowda, Harshavardhan, Mohan Babu, and Honnappa.

Speaking about the operation, Fire Officer Kiran Kumar said, “The well was narrow, and the calf was frightened, which made the rescue difficult. However, with teamwork and assistance from local residents, we managed to bring the animal out safely.”

The firefighters used ropes and improvised lifting equipment to secure the calf before pulling it out of the well. Once rescued, the animal was checked for injuries and later handed over to its owner.

Locals appreciate timely rescue effort

Residents of Sonangeri lauded the firefighters’ prompt response and courage. Many had gathered around the site to assist by providing ropes, ladders, and water during the operation. Several bystanders expressed gratitude to the Fire Department for their commitment to saving lives — both human and animal.

Local resident Ramesh Gowda said, “The fire service team did a commendable job. It was not an easy task given the depth of the well, but they handled it professionally.”

Importance of covering open wells

The incident has once again highlighted the need for safety measures around open wells, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Uncovered wells pose serious risks not only to animals but also to children and adults who may accidentally fall in.

Authorities have urged residents to ensure such wells are either covered with reinforced slabs or fenced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Fire department urges public vigilance

Officials from the Fire and Emergency Services Department reiterated their appeal for citizens to alert authorities immediately in such emergencies rather than attempting risky rescues on their own. Quick communication with emergency services, they said, can prevent casualties and ensure safe rescue operations.

Fire Station Officer Kiran Kumar added, “People should contact the fire department immediately in such cases. Our teams are trained to handle animal rescues and can respond quickly.”

Calf safe after rescue

The calf is reported to be safe and under the care of its owner. The timely intervention of the fire personnel prevented what could have been a tragic incident.

The operation not only showcased the efficiency and preparedness of the Sullia Fire and Emergency Services team but also demonstrated the importance of community cooperation during emergencies.
